What is the different between an orthodontist and a dentist?
Orthodontists and dentists share many similarities – they work together to help you improve your overall oral health – but they actually work in very different ways. Dentists cover a broad range of oral health issues. An orthodontist, on the other hand, is a specialist with a more singular focus: straightening teeth and aligning jaws.
Orthodontists are registered dental specialists who have completed an additional three years of full-time university training in orthodontics, facial growth and development, biology and biomechanics (they hold a General Dental Degree + Specialist Orthodontic Degree).
Should my child see an orthodontist?
Orthodontics Australia recommends children between the ages of 7-10 years visit a specialist orthodontist for an assessment.
And no referral from a dentist is needed.
How long does orthodontic treatment last?
Because there is just so many variations of orthodontic problems there is no set duration for all orthodontic treatments. Simple crowding can be resolved between 6-12 months and severe problems can last more than 24 months!
But on average, it usually takes about 18-24 months for most orthodontic treatments.
Do I need to wear retainers after my braces come off?
Most definitely! If only we knew how to keep teeth from moving after treatment!
Unfortunately, teeth will always have the tendency to move towards where it came from when braces come off or when you stop wearing your aligners.
Therefore, you need to keep wearing your retainers every night to maintain the beautiful outcome we have achieved after spending 18 to 24 months on orthodontic treatment.
Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?
No. You can simply make an appointment with us at any time without previously having a referral from another dental professional.
